Obituary of Esther McIntosh

McIntosh Esther Mignon Rollins was born in Washington, DC in 1926 to William Thomas Rollins, Sr. And Inez Gee Rollins. Esther was a quiet child who flourished with love and protection of her brother Billy, her sister Doris and their deeply involved and extended family and friends from Richmond and Fredericksburg to Baltimore and Philadelphia. “Esther Mignon”, as she was called by almost everyone to distinguish her from her paternal aunt and grandmother, always excelled in her school studies. She graduated from Dunbar High School in 1944, friends with a number of then-segregated Washington, DC’s academic elite. Esther earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Howard University, her Master Degree from the University of Chicago and her Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Psychology from the University of Pittsburgh, in Pennsylvania. By mid 1950’s, Esther settled in Philadelphia near her brother and began a career with the federal government, serving for over twenty years as a clinical and behavioral psychologist to hundreds of servicemen and women affected by the Vietnam era conflict. Off and on for a number of years, Esther also maintained a child psychology private practice. After her retirement in the 1970’s, Esther became a licensed stock broker, a vocation she learned through her late husband, David McIntosh. Later in life, Esther took up dancing classes, became intrigued with the area of Emotional Intelligence and consulted as a certified Executive Coach. She was always most comfortable surrounded by her mid-century style furnishings, her collection of Dox Thrash artwork, and visits from family members - in particular, the children. Esther was preceded in death by her beloved parents, her siblings, and many other loved ones. She enjoyed the care and attention of those who grew up around her and those she leaves behind, including nephews, nieces, and cousins, Mark, Alicia, Nancy, BB, Mignon, Becky, Lois Ann, and Arlene, and her grand nieces and nephews alike.
