Obituary of Francis Xavier Quinn
Francis X Quinn
February 27, 1941 – November 8, 2021
Loving and devoted husband to Madelyn (nee Quinn) and loving and adoring father to Shannon (Tom); Brian (Meridith); and Sean (Gabriela). Franny loved his family and was PopPop to his 8 beautiful grandchildren: Katie, Thomas, Celia, Isabella, Paul, Brooke, Carter and Annie. He was Uncle Franny to many nieces and nephews, all of whom were special to him. He also had many dear cousins who he loved. He was pre-deceased by his Mother, Margaret (nee Tryon) and Father, John “Harp” Quinn; his brother, John J Quinn and sister, Kitty Corboy. He grew up in the Fairmount section of Philadelphia and it always remained a huge part of his life. His life-long
cousin, Kitty Dolan, who was like a second sister to him, still lives there. He was an avid fisherman, hunter, fly-tyer, gardener and bicycle rider. He loved all things outdoors—and passed on this love to his children and grandchildren. He taught Math for approximately 40 years at the High School and College levels, until retirement in 2005. Most of that time was
spent at Cardinal O’Hara High School in Springfield, Delaware County. While still teaching, he pursued a Physical Therapy degree and attained this in 2000. He retired from Physical Therapy around 2015. Being a teacher, he always had various jobs during the summers, some of which were: laborer in a paper mill, insurance salesman; realtor; summer manager of a Pocono Mountain community; and huckster. He would often say there just wasn’t enough time to pursue all that he wanted to do. At the age of 75, Franny decided he would fulfill a lifetime dream of becoming a Mummer. He showed up at a Greater Kensington String Band meeting and declared he wanted to join. When asked what instrument he played, he said, “None”. He took up banjo under the tutelage of a long-time member and became a good musician. He will be remembered for his hearty laugh and be forever missed. Relatives and friends are invited to his Mass of Christian Burial, Saturday, November 20th, 10:30 AM at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 119 Rector Street, Philadelphia, PA 19127, preceded by his Visitation at 9:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, donations in his honor can be made to St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, St. Jude Children’s Hospital, Memorial Giving, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105, or Greater Kensington String Band, 7235 Edmund Street, Philadelphia, PA., 19135, attn: William Gerner.
