I knew Alvin through my Uncle. They both worked at Siemens and were the best of friends. Growing up I spent a lot of time with my cousin at her house, where Alvin and Uncle Norman would be in the garage doing stuff that looked really cool to a 10 year old. I’d watch them out there whenever I could. But their circle at the time was pretty big, and let’s say “colorful.” Too often I’d find myself towered over by loud, scary guys who cursed too much and to whom I was invisible.
Alvin was not one of those guys. He’d notice me off to the side and always came over to ask how I was, remembering my name and patiently explaining what they were doing, how things worked etc. Never rushing, never a sense that he was just trying to get me out of his hair. My first ride on a motorcycle was with Alvin. A good, long ride too; in the Poconos and on a Harley, no less! It was a thrill.
These few stories are small in the grand scheme of things. But some 50 years later this is what comes to mind in remembering Alvin. That, and his incredible intellect. When I think of Alvin, I’m reminded to be nice and take an interest in people… You never know how big an impression your small gestures may make.
